Dr Renate Sommer is a German Christian Democrat MEP since 1999 and member of the EPP Group in the European Parliament. She is member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. She is the EPP Standing Rapporteur on Turkey and the expert on food safety of her group. She was leading in important food dossiers, e.g. the “Health Claims Regulation” and the FIC Regulation. She is an Agricultural Scientist (Dipl.-Ing. agr.), did her Doctorate on consumer behaviour in buying food at the University of Bonn and worked as a scientific assistant at Bonn University and at the “Rural Youth Academy” of the German Farmers Union. Since four decades she is active in politics on the local, regional and national level. She was a City Counsellor and during the last two parliamentary terms member of the National Committee on Food and Agriculture of her party. She is member of the Board of Directors of the Max Planck-Institute in Cologne and President of the EP Beer Club. She received several honours from the German Food Sector and was honoured by the Church of Cyprus with the Golden Medal of Saint Paul.
