Marlene Bonnici

Permanent Representation of Malta to the EU

Ambassador Marlene Bonnici became the Permanent Representative of Malta to the EU in July 2012. Before this role, she was involved in the relations between Malta and the EU becoming Permanent Secretary for EU funds at the Office of the Prime Minister in Malta in 2011. The Ambassador was Director General at the Office of the Prime Minister in Malta from 2004 to 2011. In 1999 she was Counsellor and Executive Secretary of the EU Assistance Coordination Task Force in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malta. From 1992 to 1998 the Ambassador was First Secretary at the Embassies of Malta in Bonn and then in Brussels. The Ambassador began her career at the Ministry of Education in Malta as Teacher of German in 1989. Ambassador Bonnici graduated from the University of Malta with a degree in Psychology, philosophy, sociology and German. She also completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in Diplomatic Studies as well as an extra year at the Institut International d’Administration Publique in Paris.
